Fundamentals of futsal

If you make a mistake and lose the ball, chase it even if you are a striker and have to run all the way back. This is more attitude and discipline than skill.
Always know where your teammates are especially when you don't have the ball. This will allow you to make passes the moment you get the ball.
Do not try to dribble the ball alone past the whole opposing team.
Off the ball movement is very important. This is harder to master than being on the ball. You have to learn how to open up spaces, make yourself available for a pass and drag away defenders to make space for your teammates.
Passing is important. A misplaced pass in a small court can lead to dangerous counterattacks.
Mental strength is important. Do not feel disappointed when your teammate makes poor decisions. It is important the team morale is kept high.

How to become a good Defender in futsal

Always keep an eye on the runner or striker from the opposing team. As the last man of the team, the defender should never let the runner or striker get the through pass or high lob pass.
While defending, it is important to pressure and mark the opposing team striker. Giving him too much space will allow him to receive passes and shoot. The term “shadow” means to follow and pressure him. Do not attempt to steal the ball. Find the correct distance to mark your player. Marking too close will cause problems if the striker is able to twist and turn or cut you on your side.
NEVER go for a tackle if you are not 100% sure you will get the ball. Always anticipate and wait for your opponent to move.
Watch the ball and not the body because you want to tackle the ball not the player. Defenders could sometimes get fooled by body movement so it is important not to get confused.
Never stand straight while defending. Always stand left or right depending on your opponent’s movement. This will allow you to run back to defend on the left or right without delay after your opponent has cut the ball past you. Take note that both your feet are not opened too wide to avoid “oles”.
Positioning, anticipation and cutting a pass or through pass is one of the most important part of being a Defender. The defender has to position himself quite far apart from the striker but not too far. This is called luring which means to let the opponents have the impression that their striker is unmarked. As the pass is made, the defender would be able to intercept it. To perfect this baiting and luring technique requires time, practice, fast movement and anticipation. Quick feet movement and fast body reaction needs to be perfected to fully utilize this technique.
If you are cornered or pressured, always pass the ball back to your goalkeeper. Do not attempt to hit it upwards.
ALWAYS pass. Do not try to dribble especially if you are the last man.
Do not be afraid to attack. Defenders can use the 1-2 to get forward fast. However, it is important to track back once the ball is lost.
Always be alert. Look around the court and release the ball to your teammates who are unmarked once you have the chance.

In fustal, defenders not only play as defenders but as playmakers too. By practicing passes, defenders are a team's playmaker and chance-creator by giving the important passes and balls to their teammates. Every decision making move is basically in the hands of the defender who is closest to the goalkeeper.

Elites 0 Team Orange 3

The sun was scorching hot when the match started. Team Orange led the first wave of attack, causing the Elites defence loads of problems. It was not long before Team Orange recorded their first goal. A long ball from midfield landed in the penalty box and Clarence failed to claim his ball, enabling the left winger to nick the ball away for his strike mate and the ball was duly dispatched into the bottom left of the goal. The second goal followed soon after. Joseph made a mess of a long ball, allowing it to bounce past him into the path of Weilie and the opposition player. Weilie could only hit the ball back to Clarence, who parried it into the path of Team Orange's player and he tapped the ball in for the second goal. Elite's offence failed to record any significant shots. Unfortunately in the first half, one of Team Orange's players slipped while trying to control the ball and injured himself badly. An ambulance was summoned as the first half ended prematurely due to the injury.

The second half started despite the departure of their injured player. Both teams were reminded that it was a friendly and everybody must play with care. Joseph started in goal as Clarence had to rush to the hospital for personal reasons. The third goal came as soon as the half started. Team Orange's players stormed through the middle of park before one of them took a shot. Joseph did excellently to dive to his left and parry the ball out. However, it landed onto one of Team Orange's players foot and he curled a shot into the bottom left corner of the goal. This half saw Elites having more possession but nobody was able to capitalise on the chances. Chieh Suan missed a one-on-one chance, a penalty and recorded several offsides. Melvin did well to dribble past the whole Team Orange defence, but he was unable to finish the move. Meanwhile, Melvin had another free kick chance but he blasted it over for a goal kick. Joseph too made several important saves and collected his ball well. The game ended 3-0 to Team Orange.

A big thank you to Team Orange and the referee for the game. All of Elites players would also like to wish the injured Team Orange player a speedy recovery.

Man of the Match: Ben, Yeewee

The only bright spark in the Elites team. Ben controlled play well down the left and in the middle of the park and was able to create numerous opportunities for the team.

Yeewee was solid no matter as a defending midfielder or a centre back. Single-handedly, he was able to stop attacks and provided an extra edge in attack while moving up the field.

The defence did reasonably well with the exception of individual mistakes. Wenjie proved that he deserves a spot in the team with a solid display down the left. Joseph did well in intercepting crosses and managed several important saves while standing between the sticks. He could have been Man of the Match if not for the mistake which led to the second goal. Jiajie and Weilie also did well in marking their man.

The offence however, displayed a lacklustre performance. Melvin, Chieh Suan and Jun Xiang failed to test the goalkeeper significantly. The rest of the midfield too, with the exception of Ben, failed to link up play.

Elites 5 FC Dynamo 2

It was back-to-back victory for team Elites as we scored 5 goals at Yusof Ishak Secondary. The first goal was a delightful long ball from Joseph that the opposition defender failed to clear, allowing Chieh Suan to control the ball and lash it in for the first goal. The second goal was fantastic interplay between Nicholas, Ben and Chieh Suan which culminated with Chieh Suan hitting it against the pole before Ben finished it. The goal was his second in as many games. Weilie, unfortunately, sprained his ankle and Zhen Ping had to substitute him just after 20minutes. Zhen Ping almost had a spectacular goal but he was denied by the crossbar and Nic with a similar effort. In the meantime, FC Dynamo managed to peg a goal back and continue to pile on the pressure as they hit the pole twice.

In the second half, Elites managed to score 3 more goals. The third, a through ball by Nic which Chieh Suan comfortably scored. The fourth, a great solo effort by Nic which ended with a nice slot and Jun Xiang with the last, beating two defenders and the keeper. We should have had another goal in the process, where Joseph was adjudged to be offside which wasn't the case. The opponents managed to get another goal back but it was too little too late. The match ended 5-2 to team Elites. A big thank you to FC Dynamo and the referee for the match.

Man of the Match: Nicholas

He created numerous good opportunities and held up play well in the middle of the park. He was eventually rewarded with a goal and an assist.

Honourable Mentions: Chieh Suan, Ben, Yan Yuan and the whole defence line

4 goals in 2 games. That says it all. However, he could have scored alot more had he been more alert.

The left side of today's lineup did extremely well. Yan Yuan was alert to danger and many a times did well to clear the ball, one of them being a superb tackle while being on the backfoot.

Ben tortured the right back and the opposition defence with his "dancing" feet and delivered deadly crosses into the box. He was responsible for two goals too.

It was another disciplined play by the defence line and the goalkeeper. Clarence kept us in the game with several good saves and his alertness to come out to claim balls was great. Yeewee, Joseph and Jiajie too played well to nullify the threat of FC Dynamo's strikers.

Elites 6 Reds 3

Today's match mark the much anticipated return of our former captain, Nicholas. As most should know, Nicholas was and still is a very influential leader of our team. Today's defence boasted regulars Joseph and Jiajie, partnered by Yan Yuan and Weilie on the left and right back positions respectively. Ben and Chieh Suan occupied the wing roles, Nicholas and Yee Wee in the middle of the park while Melvin and Jun Xiang completed the 4-4-2 lineup.

It was a great start for Elites as Jun Xiang had an effort rebounded off the goalpost in the early minutes. Halfway into the first half, Nicholas finally managed to break the deadlock by unleashing a tame left-footed effort which managed to beat the keeper for the first goal. More good play saw Nic hit the crossbar with a great free kick and minutes later another left-footed shot by Nic hit the underside of the crossbar and into the net for Elites' second goal. Jun Xiang also had another great opportunity which was palmed over by the keeper. However, all these were undone by 2 goals in quick succession by the opposition. The first a soft penalty and the second, an unfortunate and controversial goal which allowed them to make it all square heading into halftime.

The second half saw a tactical change by Elites with Chieh Suan moving into striker position and Melvin to the right wing. It proved to be a masterstroke. A great tackle by Ben allowed Chieh Suan to wriggle free of his marker, cut in and shoot for the third Elites goal. The Reds are no pushover either as they managed to equalise for the second time through their right winger, who managed to exploit both Weilie and Wenjie before unleashing a wicked shot into the top left hand corner of the goalpost. However, it was all Elites after that. Nic finally got his hat-trick with a clever run down the right with a nice finish, Chieh Suan scoring his brace in a similar style and Ben latching onto Ben's(new member) wonderful through ball and finishing cooly with a shot beyond the keeper's reach.

This was nevertheless one of the greatest matches Elites have played. Credits to all our players for their hardwork and determination. A big thank you also to Matthew of team Reds and the referee.

Defensive error was once again Elite's Achilles heel as we succumbed to yet another win-less match. Forwards Melvin and Chieh Suan did well to equalise twice with solo efforts of their own. Overall there are a few other notable mentions like Weilie who improved considerably since the last game, Jiajie, Joseph, Ben, and Ka En who unfortunately got injured again. Wenjie and Yan Yuan on the other hand, has to focus more on their vision and composure as they played poorly in the match, letting players pass them and losing possession. A big thank you to referee Tay and Team Reds(as their kit were red) for the match.

Elites 2 Jun Xiang's Friend 2

Elites took back to the field after a 3 month plus hiatus, taking on a team just known as Jun Xiang's friend's team. Melvin, the all-time top scorer for Elites, managed to bag a brace on either half to cap off an excellent evening, the latter a stunning free kick that sailed straight into the net. However, it was not to be as the hardwork before was undone in the last 20 minutes due to lapses in concentration by the defence and the goalkeeper, allowing the opposition to peg back 2 goals in succession. Overall it was a very commendable performance by the team; albeit without main starters Ka En and Joseph. A very big thank you to the referee and Jun Xiang's friend for the match.

Today's lineup boasted new members Ryan and Chee Kheng. The condition of the field was criticised by both teams but nevertheless, the game was given the go-ahead. The first goal came from a backline error, allowing the opposition striker to bring the ball forward for his goal. The second error was by Joseph who did not track his runner, allowing him an easy shot on goal. Overall the team's defence played poorly with the exception of Yeewee and Jiajie, who were solid at right back and left back respectively, and Clarence, who produced some great saves to keep the scoreline respectable. The team's offense was disappointing as they couldn't muster a clear opportunity though Melvin had a couple 1 on 1 chances and Joseph, a glancing header wide. A big thank you to AJPL United and the referee for the match.

Elites 1 Team Orange 4

The weather was undoubtedly not the best, as the sun shone down brightly on the pitch. In the early minutes of the match, we had the better chances. After wriggling past the centre back, Melvin unleashed a weak right footed shot which did not trouble the keeper. Minutes later, another chance came knocking on the door and Melvin dispatched it with his stronger left leg, only for it to hit the crossbar. After that it became all Team Orange. A weak clearance from the backline allowed the opposition midfielder to unleash a shot into the back of the net; though Clarence could have done alot better. The gloves were switched and Joseph was now the keeper. However, the second goal left him rooted to the ground. Another defensive error allowed Team Orange's striker to curl a stunner into the top right hand corner. The score was 2-0 after half-time.

The second half started as it ended in the first, with Team Orange dominating the possesion. An in-swinging corner followed by a header by the opposition resulted in the third goal and the fourth goal did not come any later. Things were looking alot better for us, when Joseph had a low free kick saved and another shot where he nutmeg-ed the keeper, only for the ball to be hit too hard for him to turn it into goal. However, we finally managed to break the egg. A free kick into the box met Jiajie who finished it with a cool scissors kick to save some pride for the team. The final whistle gone and the match was set.

The defensive backline certainly has alot to improve on and every player should train more on their stamina. Full credits to Team Orange for their great play and the outcome was certainly well-deserved. Once again, a big thank you to Team Orange and the referee for the match.

Score: ELITES 2 FC Dynamo 0

Goals from Jun Xiang and Melvin was able to secure us a win, although we could have gotten a couple more from a missed penalty and a long shot from outside the penalty box by Jun Xiang which hit the underside of the bar. The first goal was from a corner taken by Steven which landed on the feet on Jun Xiang who did well to control it, before shooting it into the bottom corner of the goal. The second was a good individual effort from Melvin which saw him wriggle past several defenders before slotting into an empty net with his weaker right foot after the opposition goalkeeper came out to apply pressure. The clean sheet was also a great result as Clarence managed decent saves and marshalled his penalty box well. The defense was also consistent despite a few errors. Overall the team performed well with Yee Wee, Ka En and Ben playing tirelessly and putting in their best. However, we have to focus alot more on our passing game and our offensive play.

A big thank you to FC Dynamo and the referee for the match, and surely the contributions of all ELITES players.

See liao I also damn inspired to do sth like this, but can we? People got training schedules, got practice often. But all we do is play futsal on a Sunday. I guess even if I arrange every Saturday and Sunday train on a field, the number of ppl who attend also surely not much bah. Another thing is, some of us in this team dont even have the basics, some dont have stamina but still dun wanna improve more. Its hard to get such passion out of this team I guess. But like Melvin say, if we wanna see ourselves playing together in 20 years time, its time to start focusing more on the team and start to train more n practice more together.

Passion, hardwork, dedication ! If you think we r just playing for leisure and fun every weekend, then sadly I think you dont deserve to be in this team.
